Learn More About Hickory Syrup
Unlike maple syrup, the hickory flavor is extracted using the bark of Shagbark Hickories. Through a roasting and boiling process, the students of South Hill Forest Products create a delicious syrup, known for its sweet, rich, and smoky flavors.
Step 1: With the dawn of the new year, we begin collecting loose bark from the Shagbark Hickory tree. This is done sustainably by marking and tracking what trees are harvested each year, ensuring that new bark is allowed to properly regenerate.
Step 2: Collected bark is then thoroughly scrubbed clean and allowed to dry overnight.
Step 3: The cleaned bark is baked in a standard oven, before being boiled to create a hickory tea. This tea is left to cool after it has thoroughly steeped.
Step 4: The hickory tea is then filtered and boiled once again. During this second boil, sugar is gradually added until a thick syrup has been created. We then filter this one more time to ensure it is smooth and delicious!
Step 5: We then sterilize bottles in boiling water. These bottles are filled, capped, tagged, and labeled. We encourage you to order and try this unique and delicious syrup.
