Learn More about Carving
Carving three-dimensional objects out of wood has roots throughout much of humanity’s history. Each year, South Hill Forest Productions proudly continues this art form by carving wooden spoons, knives, and other creations.
We learn traditional carving methods with both knives and axes. Using elements within the forest, such as fallen and foraged wood, is also keenly pursued.
The products we carve are durable, reliable, and beautiful tools that can last years if not decades. We encourage you to explore what we are currently offering!
One of the most important aspects of carving wood is carving “downhill”/with the grain of the wood in order to prevent tearing and excessive knife wear.
We use some strokes (Forehand Grip, Chest-lever Grip) to remove larger pieces of wood and use other strokes (Thumb-Push, Simple Pull, etc.) to shave off “onion skin thin” layers.
Students will carve their products until they have taken shape and then will begin sanding to end up with a more consistent and refined carving. The sanding process allows us to get a nice smooth surface.
These products, after they are sanded, will be oiled with several layers of oil to seal the wood and and making it less absorbent. This protects the product from the elements and shows off the characteristics of the wood. Students may also add wood-burned designs onto their piece.
Students work on wood carvings from the start of the semester through our Open House each year, where we sell all our lovely hand-carved products.
